MAS Freedom Responds to Holy Land Foundation Re-Trial ‘Guilty’ Verdict

WASHINGTON, D.C. (MASNET) Nov. 24, 2008 MAS Freedom (MASF), as the civic and human rights advocacy entity of the Muslim American Society (MAS), has learned of today’s announcement that the Dallas, TX jury in the Holy Land Foundation re-trial has returned with a guilty verdict for the Holy Land Foundation (HLF) and five of its former leaders.

“It is amazing how two different juries can hear the same evidence and come up with a different conclusion,” stated MAS Freedom Executive Director, Mahdi Bray.

Central to many in the Muslim community is the unprecedented use of designating over 300 individuals, including many major Muslim organizations, as “unindicted co-conspirators.” MAS Freedom has strongly protested this and continues to fight this abuse by the US government. “Use of the wholesale designation “un-indicted co-conspirator” smears the reputation of well-respected Muslim organizations and their leaderships and it cannot be allowed to continue,” stated Bray.

“MAS Freedom will continue to fight for the rule of law in our country and against the U.S. government’s continued and outrageous overreach in prosecuting members of the Muslim community diligently striving to protect and feed hungry children; not only here at home, but in Palestine and anywhere else where we can have a significant impact in averting a crises’ of hunger.”

Additionally, we will continue to challenge our government’s infringement upon the constitutionally protected rights of the freedom of religion and speech as guaranteed by the First Amendment,” Bray concluded.

ACLU Challenges Government’s Authority to Designate Charities as Terrorists Without Due Process or Court Oversight

http://www.webwire.com/ViewPressRel.asp?aId=80698

In October 2008, a federal judge granted the ACLU’s request for an emergency order blocking the government from designating KindHearts as an “specially designated global terrorist” (SDGT) without further judicial review. Today’s (Nov. 24, 2008) motion asks the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio to lift the freeze on KindHearts’ assets and to block the threatened designation of the charity as an SDGT, or, in the alternative, to block the threatened designation until KindHearts has been provided with constitutionally adequate due process approved by the court.

MAS FREEDOM MOURNS THE PASSING OF IMAM WARITH DEEN MOHAMMED

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Inna Lillah wa inna ilayhi raji’oun

(To Allah we belong and to him we will return.)

By Aishah Schwartz

WASHINGTON, D.C. (MASNET) Sept. 9, 2008 – MAS Freedom (MASF), the civic and human rights advocacy entity of the Muslim American Society (MAS), has learned this afternoon from a source at Washington, D.C.’s Masjid Mohammed, of the passing of Imam Warith Deen Mohammed, 74, leader of the largest identifiable constituency of Muslim Americans and recognized worldwide as a leading Islamic Thinker and representative.

“May Allah bless our departed Imam and elevate his rank in paradise. Imam Mohammed was certainly one of the great legacies – one of the greatest being that he built a bridge for many to move from proto-Islam to orthodoxy, and established bridges of understanding between people of faith throughout the world,” stated MAS Freedom Executive Director, Mahdi Bray.

Imam Mohammed succeeded his father, the Honorable Elijah Muhammad, in 1975 as the leader of the Nation of Islam with unanimous support of its followers and began its transformation to traditional Islam as practiced by over 1 billion Muslims worldwide. He opened the Nation of Islam membership up to all races of Muslims and encouraged Muslim Americans to register to vote and become full participants in the politics and economics of America.

Through a lifetime study of the Qu’ran and the life of Prophet Muhammad, Imam Mohammed attempted to forge closer ties with mainstream Muslim communities, including Latino Muslims.

As the years passed the reformed Nation of Islam morphed into what is now known as ‘The Mosque Cares’, based in Calmut City, Illinois, and comprised mainly of followers within the Muslim community who have accepted traditional Islam.

Imam Mohammed was also the first Muslim to ever give the invocation in the U.S. Senate. In 1993, he gave an Islamic prayer during the first Inaugural Interfaith Prayer Service of President Bill Clinton, and again in 1997 at the second Interfaith Prayer Service.

The Detroit Free Press reported on August 30, that in honor of the WDM Ministry Convention’s return to Detroit’s Cobo Center, after a 10-year absence from the city, Imam Mohammed delivered a lecture and keynote address to a capacity crowd, urging those listening to assume personal responsibility, advising that, “We all … should be trying to be Christ like.”

“He was always calling for cooperation between faiths,” stated Nadir Ahmad, 58, of Detroit.

Imam Mohammed was born October 30, 1933 in Hamtramck, Michigan. He is survived by a sister, Lottie Muhammad; three brothers, Nathaniel Muhammad, Elijah Muhammad II, and Akbar Muhammad, Ph.D., as well as 45 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.

Imam Mohamed’s brother, Jabir Herbert Muhammad passed away August 25, 2008 following heart surgery in Chicago.

Imam Yusuf Saleen of Washington, D.C.’s Masjid Mohammed, has flown to be with Imam Mohammed’s family in Chicago, according his assistant, Tariq Najeeullah.

There is no word yet on a cause of death or details for Imam Mohammed’s burial service.

MAS Freedom will update this story as additional information becomes available.

Palin Slams Obama’s Work as Community Organizer – But Why?

In a transparent attempt to attack the depth of Barack Obama’s political resume, Republican Vice-Presidential nominee Sarah Palin, dismissed the Democratic Party nominee’s experience as a Chicago community organizer, saying her stint as mayor of Wasilla, Alaska (population 8,000), unlike Obama’s neighborhood work, was a job with “real responsibilities”.

But Governor Palin, who presents herself as a person in touch with the needs of ordinary Americans, should realize the real importance of grassroots community service as a cornerstone of real participatory democracy, and the glue that makes the political process viable for people of all political persuasions.

It’s also likely that Obama’s Chicago community encompassed quite a few more citizens than Governor Palin’s entire town

Governor Palin, however, failed to mention that Senator Obama is a graduate of Harvard Law School.

Perhaps her next form of political attack on the Democratic presidential nominee will be to compare her own intellectual pedigree with his.

MAS Freedom Reports Landmark Success of Islamic Summerfest 2008

By Aishah Schwartz

WASHINGTON, D.C. (MASNET) Sept. 1, 2008 - MAS Freedom (MASF), as the civic and human rights advocacy entity of the Muslim American Society (MAS), in its ongoing effort to engage the Muslim and non-Muslim community in the pursuit of healthy, family and youth oriented entertainment, announces the landmark success of the August 30 first annual Islamic Summerfest 2008, held at Columbus Ohio’s Lifestyle Community Pavilion.

This year’s event, produced by Handshake Productions, was also sponsored by the now world-renowned Muslim comedy tour, “Allah Made Me Funny”, featuring Mo Amer, Azhar Usman, and Preacher Moss, and co-sponsored by DAA Enterprises, Inc.

In addition to Allah Made Me Funny, Saturday’s event included guest appearances by Native Deen, Tyson & Remarkable Current, Oman Ali and the M-Team; also featured, Imam Mahdi Bray, Spoken Word Poet, Safia Baig and MAS Youth Talent Winner Alex Schein.

Saturday’s live performance was Chappelle’s first in front of an all-Muslim audience after spending some time out of the limelight as he sorted out the writing process of his craft while coming to terms with a previously unspoken of Muslim identity.

Chappelle, who converted to Islam in 1998, stated in a 2005 Time Magazine interview, “I don’t normally talk about my religion publicly…but I believe it is a beautiful religion if you learn it the right way.”

The Islamic Summerfest 2008 audience was wowed as Chappelle joined the Allah Made Me Funny tour for an uproariously hilarious 75-minute performance.

“It was such a blessing to launch the start of Ramadan by performing in front of a Muslim audience,” stated Chappelle.

“Allah Made Me Funny-The Official Muslim Comedy Tour” concert film is set to be released October 3, 2008 across the nation. (Visit www.AllahMadeMeFunny.com for details.)

Allah Made Me Funny lifts the veil to reveal the humorous truth of what it’s really like to be Muslim in America. Throughout their routine, the comedians poke fun at themselves, their communities, government, human nature and the tricky predicament of living in post-9/11 America. Allah Made me Funny gives people of all cultural backgrounds an opportunity to laugh hard, drop their guard and open their minds.

MAS Freedom will announce details in the months ahead for Islamic Summerfest 2009.

MAS Freedom Joins Vigil in Support of Immigrant Rights After Latest ICE Raid

Latino Community Members and Employer Targeted

WASHINGTON, D.C. (MASNET) Aug. 14, 2008 – MAS Freedom (MASF), the civic and human rights advocacy entity of the Muslim American Society (MAS), responding to a August 13, 2008 northern Virginia raid resulting in the detainment of 42 Latino immigrants, joined the National Capital Immigrant Coalition in a vigil outside the Fairfax County Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Detention office Wednesday night.

Friends and family members of those arrested also attended the vigil, organized in protest of ICE’s tactic of denying detained immigrants access to legal representation before subjecting them to often rigorous and intimidating sessions of interrogation. (more here)

MAS Freedom Joins Call for Responsible Testimony in the Fight Against Terrorism

Executive Director Delivers Letter to Congressman Brad Sherman on Behalf of MAS and MASF

July 30, 2008

Congressman Brad Sherman
2262 Rayburn House Office Building
Washington, DC 20515-0524
By Fax: (202) 225-5879

Dear Congressman Sherman,

I am writing to you in your capacity as Chair of the House Subcommittee on Terrorism, Nonproliferation and Trade.

The Muslim American Society (MAS) and its civic and human rights advocacy entity, MAS Freedom (MASF), strongly protest the invitation to Steven Emerson to testify tomorrow, July 31st, before your subcommittee.

Mr. Emerson has proven to be both consistently subjective and vindictive in his numerous attacks on Muslim leaders and organizations in the United States. His numerous public attacks on MAS, the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA), the Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC), and other major national organizations in the Muslim community, have attempted to perpetuate the myth of our collusion with terrorism and violence, despite overwhelming evidence that these allegations are completely false.

Further, we believe that Steven Emerson, who is a self-described “expert” on terrorism, is hardly capable of providing the objective information required by your subcommittee for a credible assessment of the subject of his presentation: Leveraging Foreign Aid to Achieve U.S. Policy Goals.

We, too, oppose violence and terrorism. We support the goal of your subcommittee to enhance the security of the American people. But we believe that Muslim-bashers like Steven Emerson – who pursue their own political agendas – should not be consulted as “experts” on the topic. His testimony will only likely contribute to the atmosphere of unwarranted prejudice that heaps blanket condemnation upon our entire community.

We ask that this invitation be rescinded, or that you postpone the hearing until a more objective and credible witness is invited to testify. Further, we respectfully request that this formal objection to Mr. Emerson’s invitation to testify be noted in the records of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Terrorism, Nonproliferation, and Trade.

Respectfully yours,

Mahdi Bray
Executive Director
MAS Freedom

Obama Launches Massive Latino Voter Drive

By Daniel W. Reilly

ARLINGTON, VA (The Crypt) July 29, 2008 – Sen. Barack Obama’s presidential campaign launched a massive $20 million effort to attract Latino voters on Tuesday, hoping to erase the inroads the Republican Party has made with the key demographic group in the last two presidential elections.

Frank Sanchez, the chairman of the Obama for America National Hispanic Leadership Council, said the unprecedented effort will focus on paid advertising, online organizing, increased staffing in Latino communities and organizing surrogates to hit the campaign trail.

Sanchez said efforts will be particularly focused in the key swing states of Nevada, Florida, New Mexico and Colorado, where Latino voters could make up the margin of victory. (Read More)

Obama’s Rise Epitomizes the Best of the American Dream

By Albert Camarillo

SAN JOSE, CA (Mercury News) July 28, 2008
– The recent controversial cover of the New Yorker magazine, depicting Barack Obama as a Muslim and Michelle Obama as a gun-toting terrorist, while an American flag burns in the fireplace and a photo of Osama bin Laden adorns a wall, was obviously a satirical rendering, but one that suggests some Americans view the presumptive Democratic Party presidential candidate as less than American. The notion that some people hold that Obama just isn’t American enough is, simply stated, wrong-headed. Obama’s life flows in deep currents that link him to a genuinely American experience.

As the first African-American and biracial presidential nominee for a major party, Obama’s meteoric rise to political stardom is unprecedented. But much more connects him to history. Consider the symbolic power of Obama’s candidacy, a person who, as a black man, represents America’s troubled racial past. But he also came of age in the post-civil rights era, the product of a Kenyan immigrant father and white mother from Kansas. In Obama, America’s fabled immigrant saga meets its radicalized past, and its increasingly multiracial present and future.

As a youth from humble origins raised by a single mother and his white grandparents, Obama’s life changed because of the unique opportunities afforded him and millions of other aspiring students in late 20th century American society - the pursuit of higher education. He is a poster child for a tradition more American than apple pie: educational opportunity and the striving for upward social mobility.

His story, if properly conveyed, will resonate with working-class Americans who wish for a better quality of life for themselves and their children. Add in his immigrant background and so much of Obama’s past is woven intricately into the fabric of American culture (72 percent of Americans who responded to the long form in Census 2000 reported a foreign ancestry).

Obama’s personal profile as a presidential candidate could have been ordered from central casting. Consider his appeal to American youth: He is like a Robert F. Kennedy in 1968 who had the uncanny ability to inspire legions of youthful voters to follow him. Consider his oratorical ability to communicate messages about needed changes in society, and one conjures up images of Depression-era fireside chats by Franklin D. Roosevelt, inspiring calls to public service by John F. Kennedy in the early 1960s, and the charismatic appeal of Ronald Reagan in the 1980s persuading citizens to believe again in American greatness following a decade of crises associated with a disastrous war, economic decline and widespread discontent.

Consider the symbolic power of an Ivy League-trained person, one generation removed from an immigrant experience, a man who could have made a fortune as a corporate lawyer but instead headed to south side Chicago to help organize poor people in devastated neighborhoods and who then rises to the pinnacle of American politics in a relatively short period of time. Where else in the world could this story have taken place?

Regardless of whether Obama wins or loses in November, he is a candidate who represents fundamental links to modern American history and reflects salient features of a diverse and complex American society of the early 21st century.

If Obama and his campaign strategists simply tell his story properly, masses of voters of different social classes, races and ethnicities will identify with this young candidate and his aspirations.

ALBERT CAMARILLO is professor of American history and Miriam and Peter Haas Centennial Professor in Public Service at Stanford University. He wrote this article for the Mercury News.

Crossing the Line: NY Post Attempts to Label Prominent Muslim Advocate as ‘Terror Imam’

From the Desk of Ibrahim Abdil-Mu’id Ramey, MAS Freedom Civil and Human Rights Director

WASHINGTON, D.C. (MASNET) July 28, 2008 – Rupert Murdoch’s New York Post has, once again, re-established itself as having the journalistic integrity and ethics rivaling the worst of tabloid publications found in the check-out isle at most convenience stores. The in-your-face sensationalism and hyperbole of Post news articles is not designed to elevate intelligent debate or present objective news information. Rather, it is published to sell tabloid-style news – trading on the emotional responses, and often prejudices – of those who might not otherwise be inclined to read publications such as the New York Times or the Economist.

So it wasn’t any surprise to me when, on Monday, July 21, I was alerted to a Post “Exclusive” cover story titled, “Train-ing Day for Jihadists – Muslim Subway Ads Have Terror Tie-In” referring to Imam Siraj Wahhaj, of Brooklyn, as the ‘inflammatory imam’, who has organized a campaign to post advertisements on 1,000 New York City subway cars, this September (during Ramadan), guiding commuters to a source for information explaining the true nature of Islam to non-Muslims curious about the religion, or who, based on inaccurate information (largely provided through media sources), believe the religion is bent on acts of violence. MAS Freedom Welcomes Judge Brinkema’s Order for Release of Dr. Sami Al-Arian

Caution Issued to ICE Officials – Refusal to Abide by Court Order Triggers Deportation Provision of Plea Agreement

By Aishah Schwartz

WASHINGTON, D.C. (MASNET & News Services) July 11, 2008 – MAS Freedom (MASF), the civic and human rights advocacy entity of the Muslim American Society (MAS), rejoices with the family of Dr. Sami Al-Arian on announcement of the news that Virginia’s U.S. Eastern District Court Judge Leonie Brinkema, has delivered a court order, dated July 10, 2008, outlining terms for his long awaited release on bond.

Thursday’s ruling stipulates that the U.S. Marshal release Dr. Al-Arian as soon as monitoring equipment arrives and bond is posted. Dr. Al-Arian would, thereafter, remain under house arrest until the pending August 13 trial date in the government’s most recent attempt to convict him on allegations of criminal contempt for refusing to testify before a grand jury.

The Washington Post also reported, however, that, while the court has ordered Dr. Al-Arian’s release, Judge Brinkema included in her comments that she could not order Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials to cooperate.

Prosecution counsel Gordon Kromberg, has already suggested that the government may block the court’s order by requesting that ICE hold Dr. Al-Arian for deportation – despite the fact that, as defense attorney Jonathan Turley stated, “the government has held Dr. Al-Arian for years (he is now in his 1,967th day of incarceration), under a criminal sentence rather than deport[ing] him,” as stipulated in a previously entered plea agreement setting out terms for his deportation effective April 11, 2008.

Instead, on March 3, 2008, a federal judge ordered Dr. Al-Arian to testify before yet a third grand jury, where, on March 20, 2008, he refused to testify for two reasons: (1) the plea agreement he concluded with government prosecutors in 2006 clearly and unambiguously exempts him from having to testify, and, (2) the government attorney seeking his testimony, Gordon Kromberg, as stated by John Halliwell in his July 1, 2008 article, “Indicted, Sami Al-Arian Faces Possible Life Imprisonment”, “is a blatant Islamophobe whose contempt of Muslims is surpassed only by his contempt for the rule of law” – evidenced by Kromberg’s comments outlined in the article, “The Affable Despot”, wherein Kromberg publicly claimed his right to use ‘other means’ to ‘punish’ people he cannot convict of any real crime in a court of law.

In any event, according to Turley, Judge Brinkema asserted that, “any resumption of custody by ICE would trigger the [plea agreement's] deportation provision,” which would set the clock ticking on the deadline by which Dr. Al-Arian must be deported.

Kromberg doggedly contented in his opposition to Al-Arian’s release, that, “Al-Arian is a man without a country and no country is willing to accept [him].”

Turley countered that Kromberg had been personally informed weeks prior to Thursday’s hearing, that the Egyptian government had already delivered a letter to the U.S. government acknowledging it would accept Dr. Al-Arian, adding that the Palestinians had also extended an offer to accept him.

In further support of his client, Turley advised the court, “Dr. Al-Arian is an international scholar who would not abandon his children or [as clearly demonstrated throughout this case], his principles, to become a fugitive,” suggesting, in conclusion, that the government was exercising ‘willful blindness’ in its continued refusal to obligate itself to the plea agreement outlining Dr. Al-Arian’s deportation.

Judge Brinkema reportedly asserted that she was getting ’strange signals’ in the matter, and further warned that she did not want to learn that the U.S. government had attempted to impede any efforts on behalf of other governments (i.e., Egypt), willing to or having offered to accept Dr. Al-Arian on deportation.

In a statement released late Thursday evening, Tampa Bay Coalition for Justice and Peace officials stated, “What was crucial in convincing the judge to grant Dr. Al-Arian’s release on bail was the heartfelt and beautifully articulated letters sent in by dozens of friends and acquaintances of the Al-Arian family. We would like to express our sincere appreciation to everyone who took the time to write those letters, and to those of you who have continued to support Dr. Al-Arian and his family in these critical times. Your support DOES make a difference.”

Dr. Al-Arian posted his entire retirement savings, $340,000, toward the bond, which Judge Brinkema allowed to stand as sufficient in amount, waiving the selfless act of an undisclosed friend who also reportedly offered to post his own home on Dr. Al-Arian’s behalf.

In addition to his son, Abdullah, Dr. Al-Arian’s children, Laila and Ali, and a number of steadfast family supporters, including four Washington Report staff members, were also in attendance at the bond hearing.

Al-Arian himself reportedly appeared gaunt and exhausted – no doubt attributable to the fact that, in addition to various other health related issues, Judge Brinkema also learned that the U.S. government had refused to allow surgical correction of a hernia Dr. Al-Arian had been suffering from, despite the fact that his family had offered to pay for the procedure.

After 12 years of surveillance and a lengthy trial in his home town of Tampa, Florida—Dr. Al-Arian has yet to be convicted of a single charge brought against him. “We have been advocating for the release of Dr. Al-Arian throughout his ordeal and will not rest until justice is served,” stated MAS Freedom Executive Director, Mahdi Bray.
