Tell John McCain and Sarah Palin to Reject the Politics of Division!

Dear Senator McCain and Governor Palin,

Time and again in America, people of all races and backgrounds have overcome division and fear, and come together to uplift the country and create a more equal and just society. It’s part of what makes this country great.

With an African-American nominee running on a major party ticket and a woman on the Republican ticket for the first time in history, this campaign has seen Americans–men and women of all races–inspired to continue that great tradition, coming together to bridge the gaps that history has set between us in service of our national progress.

But let us be clear: while we have made great strides in this country when it comes to racial equality, we are not finished. Now, more than ever, we need leadership that understands that we live in complex times where too many are quick to judge another by the complexion of their skin or the sound of their name.

In the last few weeks, Senator McCain and Governor Palin, rhetoric at your campaign events has taken an increasingly dangerous tone that seems to ignore the precarious state of our progress when it comes to race and ethnicity.

Supporters at your rallies and other events have used hateful language and called for violence against Sen. Obama yelling “kill him!” “off with his head!” and “bomb Obama.”

For the most part, you have stood by in silence. In addition, you have also repeatedly made statements that somehow connect Senator Obama with terrorism. Your surrogates have emphasized his middle name. This is problematic and dangerous, and we believe helps create the conditions that have given rise to these incidents of violent rhetoric from some of your supporters.

Today, we’re standing together as Americans of all political persuasions to express our deep concern that the decisions of your campaign are contributing to a dangerous atmosphere of paranoia, division, and hate that, as we have already seen, has the potential to seriously harm our country and its progress.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”

In these trying times, candidates seeking the highest offices in the land must call on the best in each of us, and call off the worst.

We urge you to join people of conscience from all races and backgrounds to reject the politics of division and fear, and come together to uplift the country and create a more equal and just society.

The Anti-Muslim Smear Machine Strikes Again?

By Isabel Macdonald

WASHINGTON (Huffington Post) Oct. 10, 2008 – In the midst of remarkably cynical election-time mud-slinging, the Obsession campaign is truly in a class of its own.

Over the past weeks, 28 million copies of the anti-Muslim propaganda film Obsession: Radical Islam’s War Against the West have been delivered to the doors of newspaper subscribers in swing states. The 2006 documentary, which has been a mainstay of David Horowitz’s “Islamo-Fascism Awareness Week,” describes “radical Islam” as a menace comparable to Adolf Hitler that, according to the film’s website, “is threatening, with all the means at its disposal, to bow Western civilization under the yoke of its values.”

For the groups behind the film’s distribution, the goal seems pretty clear: Scare the holy hell out of millions of voters in swing states about a possible Muslim takeover of the U.S. It’s hard to see the targeting of electoral battlegrounds as anything other than an attempt to help John McCain get elected — perhaps by capitalizing on the widespread whispering campaign that Obama is a “secret Muslim.”

And one has to admit that the Obsession campaign’s marketing plan has been quite slick. After all, what better way to disseminate hate propaganda than under the unassuming guise of a documentary film delivered in Americans’ daily newspapers? A plan that, sadly, many newspapers were all too happy to go along with for the sake of corporate profits. While a handful of newspapers — the Greensboro, N.C., News & Record, the Detroit Free Press, the Cleveland Plain Dealer and the St. Louis Post-Dispatch — have taken the ethical stance of refusing to carry the DVD (the News & Record called it “fear-mongering and divisive”), some 70 papers, including the New York Times, have delivered it to their subscribers as a paid advertising supplement.

There has really just been one small glitch in the plan: The public doesn’t seem to be buying it. Newspapers that carried the DVD have faced floods of complaints from readers, and the past week has seen protests and press conferences denouncing the film.

The problem, it would appear, is that many readers simply do not accept the notion their newspaper should provide a cover for hate propaganda. As one Durham, N.C., News & Observer reader put it, “I cannot believe that I was sent the hate-inflaming, fear-mongering video disk Obsession in my newspaper! What will you enclose next? KKK robes?”

The public, it turns out, is a much a tougher sell than the corporate media. Major corporate media outlets have for years been citing the anti-Muslim pundits featured in Obsession as “experts.”

For example: Steve Emerson has been invited regularly on NBC and described as an “anti-terror expert,” despite the fact his research has been repudiated many times over. This is an “expert” who initially blamed the Oklahoma City bombing on Middle Eastern terrorists, and who is now going around claiming that the Bush State Department is collaborating with extremists.

And then there’s Daniel Pipes. While he’s repeatedly been cited by the media as an “expert” on Islam and the Middle East, he has warned that “the presence, and increased stature, and affluence, and enfranchisement of American Muslims” entail “true dangers” for American Jews, and led a witch hunt against a public school official who was slated to run an Arabic-language charter school in New York City.

Just a month before a critical election, there are no signs that the anti-Muslim mud-slinging campaign is going away. In fact, the secretive nonprofit called the Clarion Fund behind the Obsession campaign just came out with a brand new DVD, The Third Jihad, featuring Mark Steyn — who, as FAIR’s new report documents, has warned of the “demographic decline” posed by Europe’s emerging Muslim population, and suggests there are lessons for Europeans in the Balkan example of ethnic cleansing.

You can read all about Emerson, Pipes and Steyn in a new report that’s just been released called “Smearcasting: How Islamophobes Spread Fear, Bigotry and Misinformation” . The report profiles 12 top anti-Muslim pundits, including prominent talk show hosts Bill O’Reilly, Sean Hannity and Glenn Beck.

The media’s long record of failing to challenge (and often enabling) anti-Muslim smears should leave us quite worried about how this final leg of election ‘08 will play out: Will the media continue to provide a platform to the anti-Muslim smear machine, or will they uphold standards of responsible journalism?

Smearcasting documents the public writings and appearances of Islamophobic activists and pundits who intentionally and regularly spread fear, bigotry and misinformation in the media. Offering a fresh look at Islamophobia and its perpetrators in today’s media, it also provides four snapshots, or case studies, describing how Islamophobes manipulate media in order to paint Muslims with a broad, hateful brush. “Special Thanks to The Boston Globe for Ramadan Presentation,” Imam Mahdi Bray

Observing Ramadan

Muslim faithful throughout the world are currently observing the holy month of Ramadan. Observant Muslims participate in fasting (sawm), one of the five pillars of their faith, this entire Lunar month (this year it extends from September 1st to the 30th). Eating, drinking, smoking and sexual activity is prohibited from dawn until sunset, when the fast is broken with the evening meal called Iftar. Local customs define varying traditions, including differing types of food used to break the daily fast. The fasting is meant to teach a person patience, humility and sacrifice, to set aside time to ask forgiveness, practice self-restraint, and pray for guidance in the future. (35 photos total)

DALLAS/EWORLDWIRE/Sep. 22, 2008 — The family members of the Holy Land Foundation defendants don’t understand why there is a second trial when the first one resulted in zero convictions. CRAWFORD PEACE HOUSE

WHY:

This coalition was formed to defend the basic civil rights of due process as guaranteed by the constitution of the United States. These communities continue to work together on issues and improve the quality of live for those who have no voice.

“Hopefully, the second time around will mark the end of this overblown persecution so my family can finally wake up from this nightmare,” said Noor Elashi. “My paternal grandmother, mom, five siblings and I need my dad to come out of the prosecution’s whirlpool of scrutiny and false accusations.”

The Department of Justice has never before criminalized charitable acts and its theory of providing “humanitarian aid” and “feeding hungry children” is a flawed one. The senior most ranking U.S. Department of State official, in Palestine during the time period of the alleged “illegal humanitarian aid” testified that no U.S. intelligence agency considered any of the now alleged acts or organizations to be in support of or controlled by Hamas.

“My father and his friends don’t need to be on trial - save that for the criminals; rather, they should be honored for their charity work. Anything other than a ‘Not Guilty’ verdict will be a dishonor to America and everything it stands for. I’m positive the jury will vote in favor of America and its honor,” said Sanabel Abu-Baker.

Even though other charities including USAID were performing the exact same humanitarian acts during the exact same time period with the exact same recipients, those other organizations were not included in any criminal prosecution, un-indicted co-conspirators list, or any similar prosecutions. Those close to the defense contend that this is “an Israeli trial being tried on American soil.”

The Holy Land Foundation also provided the same humanitarian aid to other countries including the United States, Turkey, Pakistan and Bosnia. Zakat, similar to tithing for Catholics, is part of the core beliefs of providing charitable aid to those who need it the most.

The Hungry for Justice coalition appeals to the American public, because everyone knows that feeding hungry children is not a crime.

Hoover Administration Infamy Revisited?

Main Street Closed

DETOUR to Wall Street: Main Street Closed

President Hoover’s Response to the Stock Market Crash of October 29, 1929.

In times of economic crisis who is responsible for helping those in need? What is the role of the president? The stock market crash of October 29, 1929 symbolized the beginning of the Great Depression in the United States.

“President Bush will be remembered as the Herbert Hoover of the 21st century. This administration chose Wall Street over Main Street,” stated MAS Freedom Director, Mahdi Bray.

Words to reflect on as we enter the backstretch of Election 2008

“One of [the] most important components of empowerment is political empowerment. [I] believe that our obligation to empower our community through political involvement stems from understanding our obligations as Muslims. Participating actively in the process of voting is a first step towards that political empowerment so vital to our ultimate goal of raising and developing exemplary citizens who will contribute to the greatness of our country, and whose convictions and dedication will illuminate the brilliance and beauty of the great message of Islam. By making sure our votes are counted, we will be empowered with the ability to construct an effective political strategy and develop a relevant political discourse - making our community not only visible and active, but able and productive as well.” – Dr. Esam Omeish

Heartfelt Reflections on the Passing of a Legendary Black American Muslim Leader - By Azhar Usman

An Apology

Heartfelt Reflections on the Passing of a Legendary Black American Muslim Leader

On September 11, 2008, while countless American flags whipped in the wind and the television and radio waves were dominated by remembrances, recordings, and stories about the terror attacks of seven years ago, I attended the funeral of Imam W.D. Mohammed (may God be pleased with him). For me, it was a somber day, but I found myself mostly lost in thought: about African-American Muslim communities, about the challenges ahead in American Muslim institution-building, and about the future of Islam in America. If you don’t know who Imam WDM was, you should look him up. The Sufis say: “The true sage belongs to his era.” And of the many gifts given to Imam WDM by God, perhaps the most obvious and beneficial one was the Imam’s profound understanding of the principles of religion, and his adeptness at intelligently applying those Islamic principles in a socially and culturally appropriate manner befitting the everyday lives of his North American followers. While carefully respecting sound, traditional jurisprudential methodologies of the Islamic religion, and the collective religious history and time-honored scholarship of classical Islam, he promulgated creative ideas and dynamic teachings across many domains of human endeavor, including theology, law, spirituality and even ethics and aesthetics, that together articulated a vision for a quintessentially “American Muslim” cultural identity. And he did all of this before anyone else, with quiet strength and unending humility—a true sage indeed.

So I stood before his final resting place, brokenhearted. And I suddenly began to feel the weight of the moment, realizing that when God takes back one of his dearly beloved friends, those who are left behind should cry not for the deceased, but rather for themselves. For the fact that they are now without one of God’s friends in their midst, and, in a sense, they are orphaned. And the tears began to well up, for I became acutely aware that I was standing in front of the grave of my spiritual grandfather, who was himself a spiritual descendant of Bilal al-Habashi (may God be pleased with him), the mighty and beloved companion of the Prophet himself. Bilal was the first Black African to convert to al-Islam at the hands of the Prophet Muhammad (may God bless him and keep him) in the sands of Arabia nearly a thousand and a half years ago. Undoubtedly, some measure of that love, mercy, compassion, and spiritual stature that inhabited the heart of Bilal has found its way down through the ages, and I found myself begging God to transfer to my own heart some glimpse of these realities now laying before me. AIG ‘Bridge Loan’ Another ‘Bridge-to-Nowhere’?

American International Group (AIG), is the latest financial giant suffering from the mortgage crisis.

AIG, the world’s biggest insurance company, also just became the beneficiary of the U.S. Government’s latest bailout on Tuesday.

“The 85 Billion dollar so-called ‘bridge loan’ could very well be another ‘bridge-to-nowhere’ at the expense of the American tax payers. How ironic, the same people in government that denounce welfare for the poor are willing to give welfare to Wall Street. We can nationalize big business but refuse to nationalize good health care. Ain’t that a hoot,” stated Mahdi Bray.

MAS FREEDOM APPLAUDS GREENSBORO, NC NEWS & RECORD FOR PRINCIPLED STAND AGAINST DISTRIBUTION OF ‘OBSESSION’ DVD

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Ask Your Local Newspaper Editor to Follow the News & Record’s Lead in Saying ‘No’ to Obsession

By Aishah Schwartz

WASHINGTON, D.C. (MASNET) Sept. 17, 2008 – MAS Freedom (MASF), the civic and human rights advocacy entity of the Muslim American Society (MAS), commends Greensboro, N.C. News & Record editor, John Robinson for going ‘on the record’ through his blog in affirming the publisher’s decision to take a principled stand against distribution of the inflammatory DVD “Obsession: Radical Islam’s War Against the West”.

Although the New York Times, and publications in Miami, Philadelphia, Denver and Pittsburg participated in the Clarion Fund supported distribution of an estimated 28 million copies of the “Obsession” DVD in newspapers, magazines and direct mailing campaigns primarily targeting “swing” election states, the Greensboro News & Record declined to accept potential advertising revenue for distribution of the DVD stating that the film was “divisive, plays on people’s fears and serve[s] no educational purpose.”

The Editor & Publisher reported on Monday that, “an article at the group’s site, www.radicalislam.org, all but endorsed John McCain this past week, then was pulled down.”

“I am disappointed that Senator John McCain, who has always gone to such great lengths in the past to present himself as a straight-shooter, would not denounce the kind of Islam-bashing the nation witnessed this past weekend with the mass distribution of a film presenting an inflammatory view of the Islamic faith – a strategically constructed action orchestrated to propagate distrust and further divide the nation as Election 2008 heads into the back stretch,” stated MAS Freedom Executive Director, Mahdi Bray.

Bray added, “But then again, as the Washington Post’s Richard Cohen points out in his aptly titled article, “The Ugly New McCain” – apparently neither the Republican Party nor its candidate are adhering to any semblance of integrity these days,” stated Mahdi Bray.

Robinson, in following up his original September 14 blog post added, “I wasn’t in on the decision so I can’t take the credit for it, although I believe it was the right one. As one editor told me on Twitter, the News & Record probably wasn’t the only newspaper that turned down the distribution of the DVD; we were just the only one to write about it.”

“As I’ve said on other occasions about news decisions, just because you can publish doesn’t mean you should,” Robinson concluded. Words of wisdom Raleigh News & Observer publisher Orage Quarles III might have heeded before authorizing the DVD’s distribution, comparing it to ‘harmless household samples’.

The News & Observer, owned by the struggling McClatchy news chain – reportedly suffering from plummeting advertising revenues – appears to now be auctioning off its journalistic integrity to the highest bidder.

In call for fair and balanced journalism and publishing practices, MAS Freedom-NC held news conferences in Raleigh, Charlotte and Ashville, on September 14 to announce that Bridges Media Group has agreed to donate 160,000 copies of a DVD portraying an authentic view of Islam that MAS Freedom-NC will be submitted to the News & Observer for distribution.

“We are asking you to join our effort to suppress the right-wing mandate to destroy Islamic credibility and disrupt the lives of Muslims who reside in this country. Contact your newspaper and ask them to follow the lead taken by Greensboro’s News & Record in taking a principled stand against distribution of the inflammatory DVD “Obsession”, stated MAS Freedom-NC Director, Khalilah Sabra.

Bray added, “And take a few minutes today to contact the Greensboro News & Record’s editor, John Robinson, asking him to let the publisher know you appreciate the paper’s position in standing by the principle, ‘Just because you can publish doesn’t mean you should’.”

If YOUR local newspaper has refused to distribute the “Obsession” DVD contact MAS Freedom and let us know by dialing at (202) 522-7417 or toll-free at 1-888-627-8471, or by email mas.freedom AT yahoo DOT com.
